What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica refers to the pain that emanates from the sciatic nerve. It is one of the more frequently reported causes of lower back pain. Studies suggest that as much as 40% of people will suffer from sciatica at some point in their life. The older you get, the higher chance you have of experiencing sciatica. Some factors that increase the risk of sciatica include smoking, obesity, and an unhealthy lifestyle. How can you deal with this ever-present health issue?
Options for Sciatica Sufferers
Most health care providers will tell a person to take an over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). This type of medicine will aid in reducing both pain and swelling. It is essential to remember, however, that ice can also do the same (and without the side effects that the medicine would bring about). If you feel sciatica coming on, ice the specific area of pain for 15-20 minutes. Doing this several times a day will prevent you from reaching for the pill bottle as often.
Most cases of sciatica will go away within a short period of time, maybe a couple of days. However, if your sciatic pain continues, you may have to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend steroid shots or possible surgery.
The good news is there is a way for you to get help that is a little less invasive. How so?
Healthy Neck, Healthy Back
A well-aligned spine and good posture begin in the neck. Even a slight misalignment in the C1 vertebra can result in the back muscles working harder to keep the head upright and the eyes level with the horizon. This is known as the righting reflex. Therefore, the upper neck must first be in proper place so that the spine can be in alignment.
If the upper neck is misaligned, this can cause changes in posture down the spine. As a result, pressure can build up on the sciatic nerve and cause pain in the lower back and legs. Here at Thrive Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Onalaska, Wisconsin, we are able to perform gentle techniques to aid in this realigning process. The neck is the first place to start when addressing the underlying problem that is triggering sciatica.
