Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome continue to baffle doctors and researchers alike. Recently, a name change was given to chronic fatigue that better describes its symptoms. In February of 2015, the Institute of Medicine stated that the new name for chronic fatigue is systemic exertion intolerance disease. As Dr. Rowe, a member of the panel, relates, the new name better describes the features of the disease, such as the depletion of energy a person feels after just a small amount of activity.
For those suffering from chronic fatigue (a condition that is closely related to fibromyalgia), this means that it may be easier to understand and diagnose. Here are a few of the most common symptoms:
- Overwhelming fatigue
- Muscle pain
- Joint pain with no redness or swelling
- Recurring sore throats
- Inability to sleep
- Waking up just as tired as when going to bed
- Problems with memory, cognitive function, and concentration
- Tender lymph nodes in the neck or armpit
- Abnormal, chronic headaches
- Still feeling exhausted 24 hours after physical or mental exertion
Where to Find Help for Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia
One area that has seen much success in helping patients cope with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia is that of upper cervical chiropractic care. Most medical doctors will attempt to focus on alleviating individual symptoms. I take a different approach with my patients by focusing my attention on making sure the upper bones of the neck are properly aligned. This is a more long-lasting solution because it is aimed at the underlying cause of many chronic symptoms. What cause is that?
Often, a connection is seen between an upper vertebrae misalignment and these conditions. This is due to the fact that the C1 and C2 vertebrae have the job of protecting the brainstem and spinal cord. If they become misaligned, they put pressure on this area instead of protecting it. This leads to faulty signals being sent to and from the brain and body resulting in conditions such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.
At Thrive Chiropractic and Wellness Center, we use a gentle procedure to realign these bones bringing the body back to functioning optimally. This is often a key element in seeing the symptoms of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue reduce in severity or go away completely.
