At one time or another, you will most likely experience neck pain. When this happens, you may ask yourself, “What’s causing my pain?” You may try to recount your activities from the previous 24-48 hours in order to find out what may have brought on such pain.
It is important to understand neck pain in order to be able to avoid it in the future. There are a number of factors that come into play when trying to pinpoint the true source of neck pain. Sometimes, it can be something so insignificant that you may not realize it’s wreaking havoc on your neck. Some of these factors may include:
- Sleeping on your stomach with your neck turned to one side.
- Keeping the muscles of your neck and shoulders tense due to focusing too hard or being stressed.
- Holding a phone to your ear with your shoulder too long.
- Straining to see over a tall person at an event or at the movies.
- Exercising or doing work that involves the use of upper body muscles, such as overhead work or painting a ceiling.
- Sleeping on a pillow that doesn’t properly support the head and neck, such as a pillow that is too fluffy or too flat.
- Resting your head on an upright hand or arm for a long period of time.
Really, any activity that causes repetitive motion or straining of the neck can cause you to suffer neck pain as a result. When you overextend the muscles in your neck, the ligaments can get damaged, leading to muscle spasms or even a sprained neck.
Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care
Sometimes, activities like the aforementioned can lead to lingering pain. If this is the case, exploring chiropractic care options is important. As upper cervical chiropractors, we will perform an evaluation first. During the evaluation, we will look for any misalignments that could have occurred due to muscle strain or injury. Once corrected, many patients have reported feeling much better, and their overall health improved.
